Nikkō: Ornate Shrines, Thundering Waterfalls & Mountain Scenery

The lavishly decorated Tōshō-gū Shrine, the roar of Kegon Falls, and cedar forests stretching up into the mountains — Nikkō is one of the most spectacular day trips from Tokyo.

Best: Apr–May & Oct–Nov Day trips & overnight Private groups of any size English-speaking driver

About Nikkō

Nikkō sits two hours north of Tokyo in the mountains of Tochigi Prefecture, and it packs more visual drama into a single day than almost anywhere else in Japan. The centrepiece is Tōshō-gū Shrine — an extraordinary complex of lacquered gates, carved beams, and gilded details built in the seventeenth century to enshrine the founder of the Tokugawa shogunate. No other shrine in Japan comes close to its decorative ambition, and the famous Yōmeimon Gate, covered in over 500 intricate carvings, alone justifies the trip.

Beyond Tōshō-gū, the Nikkō UNESCO World Heritage Site encompasses Futarasan Shrine, Rinnō-ji Temple, and the elegant red Shinkyo Bridge over the Daiya River. A short drive uphill brings you to Lake Chūzenji and the thundering 97-metre drop of Kegon Falls — one of Japan's three great waterfalls — with mountain views that stretch across the Nikkō National Park in every direction.

  • Combine with Kawagoe or Karuizawa for a two-destination day if your schedule allows

Best Time to Visit

Nikkō is rewarding in every season, with two windows standing out above the rest:

🌸 April – May: Cherry blossoms and fresh green cedar 🍁 October – November: Blazing autumn colour ❄️ Winter: Snow-dusted shrines, very few visitors ☀️ Summer: Cool mountain air, lush forest trails

Autumn is Nikkō's most celebrated season — the cedar and maple forests around Tōshō-gū and Lake Chūzenji turn brilliant shades of red, orange, and gold from mid-October, and the waterfall framed by autumn colour is one of the great views in the Kantō region. Spring brings quieter charm: the cherry trees lining the approach to the shrines bloom in late April, just as the tourist season is warming up but before the peak summer crowds arrive.

Planning Your Trip

A full day from Tokyo gives you comfortable time for the shrine complex, the Shinkyo Bridge, and the drive up the winding Iroha-zaka mountain road to Lake Chūzenji and Kegon Falls. Most visitors spend the morning exploring Tōshō-gū and the surrounding temples, then head uphill after lunch for the lake and waterfall views before the return drive to Tokyo in the late afternoon.

The drive from central Tokyo takes around two hours each way. A private car removes the need to navigate train transfers and luggage, and gives you flexibility to linger where the mood takes you. Browse the tours below or contact our team to plan your Nikkō day.
