Your journey begins with a convenient pickup from your Nagoya hotel in the morning, as you set out toward the scenic mountain region of Gifu Prefecture. The first destination is the beautifully preserved Hida Takayama Old Town (Sanmachi Suji), where Edo-period wooden merchant houses, sake breweries, and local craft shops line the charming streets. Stroll through this historic area and experience the nostalgic atmosphere of traditional Japan.
Next, visit Takayama Jinya, a former government office that offers fascinating insight into the region’s samurai-era administration and architecture. Afterward, travel to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Shirakawa-go Village, renowned for its unique gassho-zukuri farmhouses with steep thatched roofs, designed to withstand heavy winter snow. Explore the village at your own pace and admire its peaceful rural beauty.
For a panoramic view, head to the Shirakawa-go Observation Deck (Shiroyama Viewpoint), where you can capture breathtaking photos of the entire village set against the surrounding mountains. On your return journey, stop by Gujo Hachiman Old Town, often called the “Water City,” known for its clear canals, charming streets, and traditional atmosphere. If time allows, you may choose an optional visit to Gujo Hachiman Castle, perched on a hilltop with stunning views of the town below.
The day concludes with a comfortable drop-off at your Nagoya station or hotel in the evening, bringing your exploration of Takayama, Shirakawa-go, and Gujo Hachiman to a perfect close.
